  WASHING NAPPIES

It's easier than you might think!

Katie's Lazy Mum Method

There are many  ways of washing nappies involving soaking and washing in various recipies. I am quite frankly, bone idle and cannot be bothered with any of it and have better thing to do than change buckets of smelly poo water! So here is my no fuss method. (This takes the same amount of effort as a normal load of laundry!)

bullet

Place used nappies in bucket with lid. (after flushing any solids)

When you have enough to wash use rubber gloves pop in washing machine.

bullet

Use 1/2 recommended amount of non-bio (I use 1 cap of Ecover)  PLUS about a dessertspoon of PHP nappy soak in a laundry ball in the drum( I think any nappy soak is suitable, but this is the only one I have used)

bullet

Wash at 60. Tumble or line dry.

If you do get any stains (rare even after stained nappies are in the bucket for a few days!) simply leave in the sun, either on the line or on a windowsill, this works way better than anything else (like vanish ect) honest!

TOP TIPS

The trick is to have enough nappies! Have enough so you only have to wash every other day or more.

There is no need to soak nappies. (If you do decide to soak them they only need to be put through the rinse cycle of your washing machine) Try adding a little Bicarbonate of Soda to the bottom of the bucket to absorb any smells.

Adding a an antibacterial nappy soak, such as PHP Nappy Soak, to your wash sterilizes the  nappies. There is no need to wash any higher than 60.

NEVER add fabric conditioner as this will reduce the absorbency. During fabric manufacture a substance similar to fabric conditioner is added so the fabric moves smoothly through the looms, this is why you need to prewash new nappies.

Be sure to add less detergent than usual, (I'd recommend half or less) when the nappy is wet it re-dissolves any residue left on the nappies. This can irritate delicate skin and could cause nappy rash.

You can wash other clothes in with your nappies. If your machine has a pre-wash add the nappy soak to that. You can stop the machine after the prewash and add any other washing.

Wraps can be washed with normal laundry (fabric conditioner and all)

Always read the washing instructions that come with your nappies!

Note's on Nappy liners

You only need to remove solids from nappies, any stains/runny poo will be easily dealt with by your washing machine!

Paper liners are a great way to make nappy changing a little easier, if you plan to flush them make sure the ones you buy are flushable (as many high street ones are not!). However bear in mind that breastfed babies poo (pre weaning) is usually runny and goes straight through!

Fleece liners or fleece stuffable nappies keep baby very dry, but need to be sluiced (held in flush in the toilet) to remove solids.

Drying

These are very handy for drying when it's not possible to dry outside, they take up very little room (there are 18 nappies on the one in the picture). They allow air to reach all sides of the fabric so things dry quite quickly. Available from Wilkinsons for around £1.99
